In remembrance of Ann Bernice Huffsmith, advocate, philanthropist, dearly beloved wife, and mother to three children.
Ann Bernice Huffsmith was a treasure to everyone who knew her. Throughout her many years as a confidante and supporter of organisations such as the Salvation Army, and non-profits helping women overcome addiction, she also specialised in teaching dyslexic children to read and write. Thoughtful, loving, and kind; Ann was, in the words of her husband, Tom Huffsmith, a “quiet doer, she got things done and did it beautifully.”
Ann has been described as being ahead of her time in breaking gender barriers during her career as a leader in the hotel industry, and was continuously improving the communities in which she lived by volunteering to provide outreach services for women, counsel, and empowering them to live their life free from substance abuse. In remembrance of the full and vibrant life she lived, Tom has chosen to donate £10,000 to Juno Women’s Aid.
Supporting the Pet’s Project
This donation was given by Tom and the developer Conygar, which is currently on site in Nottingham regenerating The Island Quarter. The donation will be used to help fund our Pet’s Project – a vital service providing a safe place for pets to be temporarily rehoused so women and their families can flee abuse. We know that perpetrators will often use pets to control women in the home by threatening to, hurting or killing their animals to maintain control.
“Without the project I would fear so greatly by now for the comfort and security of my dog, that I would of by now taken action myself and put myself in serious danger. The project is vital for families in times like these. It is not wanted it is needed. A dog is not property it is life. It is not just an animal living under the same roof it is a family member.” Words written by Sam* a teenage boy temporarily housed in refuge with his mother.
Thank you, from Juno Women’s Aid
Juno Women’s Aid is profoundly grateful to Tom Huffsmith and Conygar for choosing Juno as their charity of choice, and to Ann Huffsmith for her incredible contributions to making the world a better place.
“On behalf of everyone at Juno Women’s Aid I would like to extend my deepest and sincerest thanks to the Huffsmith family for sharing Ann’s story with us and making this generous contribution to our ongoing work with survivors, their children and their beloved pets. This donation will enable Juno to continue to deliver vital services. We commit to continuing Ann’s work and her legacy in our work with the communities in Nottinghamshire.” – Yasmin Rehman, CEO Juno Women’s Aid
“I would like to say a massive thank you for this generous donation, it will make a significant difference and help to secure the longevity of the project. Many women who use the project tell me they would never have left if this project didn’t exist. It gives them such peace of mind to know their animals are safe and well cared for, knowing they will be reunited with their pets once they secure safe housing.” – Sarah, Pet’s Project Coordinator
