Specialist Support for Black and Minoritised Women
Juno provides specialist, culturally informed support for Black and minoritised women experiencing domestic abuse. This service recognises the additional structural, cultural, and systemic barriers survivors may face and is delivered with a strong focus on safety, advocacy, and empowerment.
We support women impacted by issues including Honour-Based Abuse (HBA), Forced Marriage, and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), alongside all other forms of domestic and sexual abuse. Survivors may experience heightened shame, stigma, and fear of disclosure, often compounded by community pressure, immigration insecurity, and mistrust of statutory services.
The service offers tailored support for women with No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF), including referrals for specialist legal advice, support to understand and navigate the UK housing system, and assistance to search for safe NRPF-appropriate refuge accommodation. Practical support includes advocacy with housing providers, social services, law centres, and the police, as well as help with benefit claims where eligible.
We ensure access to interpreters for survivors who do not speak English, recognising that language barriers can significantly increase isolation and risk. Survivors are also supported with referrals for emergency financial assistance, including food and clothing, to reduce immediate hardship.
The service provides advice, referrals, and signposting to specialist legal support, including Non-Molestation Orders, Protection from Harassment or Stalking Orders, and guidance around Forced Marriage Protection Orders where relevant.
We are acutely aware that Black and minoritised women are disproportionately affected by housing insecurity and homelessness, and that experiences of systemic racism, insecure immigration status (including pre-settled status), and economic inequality can further limit options for safety. Our approach is trauma-informed, anti-racist, and survivor-led, ensuring women feel believed, respected, and supported to make informed choices about their futures.
