JUNO Women's Aid

Older & Disabled Women

THE RIGHT TO FEEL SAFE & GET SUPPORT

Specialist Support for Older  Women & Women with Disabilities

Juno provides dedicated, specialist support for women aged 55+ and disabled women who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse. This service is delivered by an Older & Disabled Women’s Worker with specialist knowledge of the complex barriers these survivors often face, operating across both City and County.

We recognise that abuse later in life, or alongside disability, is frequently hidden and compounded by additional risks. Many older women live with the perpetrator, are retired, or are financially and practically dependent, making safe disclosure and exit significantly more challenging. Survivors may face barriers to safe contact, including shared phones or email accounts, limited digital confidence, or isolation from support networks.

Health-related factors are also critical. Mobility issues, chronic health conditions, or caring responsibilities can prevent survivors from accessing services, including refuges, or from fleeing in a crisis. In some cases, dementia may be a factor — either increasing a survivor’s vulnerability or contributing to changes in a perpetrator’s behaviour, including increased volatility.

The service also acknowledges that all forms of abuse can occur in later life, including sexual abuse. This is often under-recognised and under-disclosed due to stigma, shame, and harmful assumptions about older or disabled women, which can further entrench invisibility and barriers to support.

Support includes tailored, trauma-informed advocacy, practical and emotional support, and proactive signposting to relevant specialist services such as Age UK and health or social care partners. The focus is on empowerment, safety, and ensuring survivors feel seen, believed, and supported at every stage.

“I feel like I am starting to enjoy life again. The service has been fantastic, for me it came at exactly the right time.. it was either sink or swim and with your guidance I was able to swim”
